This weekend was warm and gorgeous so we heated up the pool and got some swimming in on Saturday and Sunday. It got us to talking about how I learned to "really" swim.
Many of you know that Kristen was a diver during high school but long before that she was a swimmer. She took to swimming like she was born in the water. It was another example of her 'no fear' mentality. When she was six we had a membership to a private pool outside of Lake Jackson. We would go out there fairly regularly to get a break from the Texas heat. Once while swimming there Kristen asked me, "Mama why don't you put your face in the water?" Me: "I never learned how." Kristen: "You just do this." She proceeded to teach me that day how to put my face in the water. I managed to catch on. We spent the rest of the summer playing a game we called over/under. I've been perfecting my swimming ever since. When we lived in Bartlesville she swam competitively for the Phillips 66 team. She would have okay times in her races, but put her in a relay...she seemed to have an extra umph when she had others depending on her. A few years ago when we put a pool in our back yard, she taught me how to turn my head and breathe without lifting my head out of the water. Too bad I never got the hang of flip turns.
