Queen of the Dirt Pile

As I was chatting with a neighbor last night I was reminded of an interaction we had about Kristen years ago. It was not long after we had moved here and Kristen was probably 14 years old. The neighbor had been driving down a nearby street and had seen Kristen at the top of a large pile of construction dirt. She was terribly worried and worked up the nerve to come tell me about it. It should be noted that at that time she had two young children. She told me what she had seen, Kristen on the top of the tall mound with her arms in the air in victory. She assumed I'd be terribly upset and worried because it was "dangerous". I calmly looked at her and asked, "Was she smoking?" Neighbor: "No." Me: "Was she kissing a boy?" Neighbor: "No." I smiled and said it was no big deal then. If she fell and broke her arm, she fell and broke her arm. It was fun for us to remember the conversation and think about the different perspectives. The worries and concerns change so much as our children grow older. I have to chuckle even more now. Kristen had no fear. I'm sure she scrambled up the mound in no time at all, declaring herself the King (Queen) of the mountain.
