An All Nighter...

It's been awhile since I've pulled an all nighter. What was once somewhat familiar in college and an occasional thing with work these days is a whole other thing in the ER on a Saturday night.

Yesterday was a pretty quiet day for much of it. Unfortunately KU lost to UNI, not sure how that happened, but when you turn the ball over for over 20 points, you can't expect much. On the bright side, the Wildcats are advancing to the sweet 16.

About 6 o'clock, Kristen was complaining of a headache so I gave her a couple of Tylenol, and she took a little nap. When she woke up, she felt warm to me so we took her temperature and to our surprise she was at 101.8. We waited just a bit, because sometimes when she first wakes up she is warm. If she runs a temperature of 101 or more it means a trip back to the hospital. We waited a bit and took it two more times over the next thirty minutes and then packed up and headed to the ER. Once checked in, we waited about an hour for them to check vitals as were about four or five folks ahead of us, and most looked much worse than Kristen. By that time, she was no longer running a fever so we thought they would give her a course or two of IV antibiotics and send us on our way. Wrong. They pulled a number of blood and urine samples to run cultures and tests on, administered a couple types of antibiotics and did a chest x-ray. As the night wore on, they determined she needed to a couple units of blood as her hemoglobin was at 8.2.

She was admitted around 4am and after the usual questions exams, etc. Kristen was able to get some continuous sleep. I made it back to the apartment around 5 for a couple hours sleep before returning to try and catch the doctors this morning on their rounds. The hope at this point is they will keep her just until she has been 24 hours fever free but we should know more when we talk to the doctor. They were just in a couple of minutes ago and her temp is still normal, so that's a good thing.

I'll update you all later as we learn more. In talking with Jill this morning it appears I am missing the snow back in Fayetteville, but it's "cold" down here too, 45 this morning with a pretty good breeze.
